Our public school system is collapsing — not from a lack of funding, but from a failure of truth, accountability, and basic human decency. As a special education teacher with 25 years in California schools, I’ve seen the slow, systematic unraveling of trust between schools, families, and students.
Some failures are visible: falling test scores, overcrowded classrooms, burned-out teachers.
But the most dangerous breakdowns are the ones no one talks about — the hidden failures. The ones that quietly destroy a child’s future under the disguise of “inclusion,” “equity,” or worse, “care.”
Here are five of them — and what you can do to fight back.
1. 🔕 IEPs Are Written… Then Ignored
The Failure:
IEPs (Individualized Education Programs) are supposed to be legal documents guaranteeing services and support for students with disabilities. In reality, many schools write them to look compliant on paper but have no intention of following through. Accommodations go unused. Goals are copied and pasted. Parents are gaslit.
The Fix:
Record IEP meetings (you have the legal right to do so with notice)
Request a written service log
Follow up every meeting with a recap email
File a compliance complaint if services aren’t delivered
2. 📉 Math Isn’t Taught — It’s Memorized
The Failure:
Thanks to scripted curriculum and standardized testing, most students learn procedures without understanding. Kids with dyscalculia, autism, or ADHD are especially harmed, not because they can’t learn math, but because we’ve stopped teaching it conceptually.
The Fix:
Use visual math tools like blocks, number lines, and games
Supplement with a scaffolded, multisensory curriculum (like Connected Blocks)
Ask for alternative assessments if your child can’t show learning through timed tests
3. 💊 Behavior Problems = Medication, Not Investigation
The Failure:
Schools are quick to label, refer, and medicate—but slow to look for trauma, sensory issues, or learning differences. Instead of adjusting the environment, they pathologize the child.
The Fix:
Demand a complete psychoeducational assessment
Ask for a Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA) before any referral to mental health
Refuse school-pressured medication until all other options have been explored
4. 🧬 Gender Ideology Is Replacing Mental Health Support
The Failure:
Children are being socially transitioned at school, sometimes without parental consent. Counselors are affirming new names, pronouns, and identities without proper assessment. Instead of treating underlying issues like trauma, anxiety, or autism, schools push students down a medicalized gender path.
The Fix:
Request written records of any counseling or name/pronoun changes
Know your parental rights under FERPA and state law
Speak at school board meetings and advocate for parental consent policies
5. 🤐 Parents Are Treated Like Enemies, Not Partners
The Failure:
Too many educators see parents—especially informed, questioning ones—as threats. You're labeled “difficult,” “political,” or even “unsafe.” But you’re not the problem. You're trying to protect your child from a system that doesn’t always tell the truth.
The Fix:
Document all communication
Connect with other parents — start a local support group or online network
Run for your school board or support candidates who respect parental rights
✊ You’re Not Crazy. The System Is.
You’re not overreacting. You’re not imagining it. You’re not alone.
These failures are real, and they’re harming kids every single day — academically, emotionally, and developmentally. But when you speak up, document, and push back, you become part of the solution.
